        Trạng từ trong tiếng Anh là một phần không thể bỏ qua. Ngoài mục đích bổ sung ý nghĩa, trạng từ còn giúp câu văn, lời nói của bạn có thêm rất nhiều cảm xúc.


1. Định nghĩa
        
        Trạng từ dùng để tính chất/phụ nghĩa cho một từ loại khác trừ danh từ và đại danh từ.
         

        

        
        2. Phân loại trạng từ
        
        Trạng từ có thể được phân loại theo ý nghĩạ hoặc theo vị trí của chúng trong câu. Tuỳ theo ý nghĩa chúng diễn tả, trạng từ có thể được phân loại thành:
        
        2.1. Trạng từ chỉ cách thức (manner)
        
        Diễn tả cách thức một hành động được thực hiện ra sao? (một cách nhanh chóng, chậm chạp, hay lười biếng ...) Chúng có thể dùng để trả lời các câu hỏi với How?
        
        Ví dụ: He runs fast
        She dances badly
        I can sing very well
        
        Chú ý: Vị trí của trạng từ chỉ cách thức thường đứng sau động từ hoặc đứng sau tân ngữ (nếu như có tân ngữ).
        
        Ví dụ: She speaks well English. [không đúng]
        She speaks English well. [đúng]
        I can play well the guitar. [không đúng]
        I can play the guitar well. [đúng]
        
        2.2. Trạng từ chỉ thời gian (Time)
        
        Diễn tả thời gian hành động được thực hiện (sáng nay, hôm nay, hôm qua, tuần trước ...). Chúng có thể được dùng để trả lời với câu hỏi WHEN? When do you want to do it? (Khi nào?)
        
        Các trạng từ chỉ thời gian thường được đặt ở cuối câu (vị trí thông thường) hoặc vị trí đầu câu (vị trí nhấn mạnh)
        
        I want to do the exercise now!
        She came yesterday.
        Last Monday, we took the final exams.
        
        2.3. Trạng từ chỉ tần suất (Frequency)
        
        Diễn tả mức độ thường xuyên của một hành động (thỉnh thoảng, thường thường, luôn luôn, ít khi ..). Chúng được dùng để trả lời câu hỏi HOW OFTEN?
        
        - How often do you visit your grandmother? (có thường .....?) và được đặt sạu động từ "to be" hoặc trước động từ chính
        
        Ví dụ: John is always on time
        He seldon works hard.
        
        2.4. Trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn (Place)
        
        Diễn tả hành động diễn tả nơi nào , ở đâu hoặc gần xa thế nào. Chúng dùng để trả lời cho câu hỏi WHERE? Các trạng từ nơi chốn thông dụng là here, there ,out, away, everywhere, somewhere...
        
        Ví dụ: I am standing here/
        She went out.
        
        2.5. Trạng từ chỉ mức độ (Grade)
        
        Diễn tả mức độ (khá, nhiều, ít, quá..) của một tính chất hoặc đặc tính; chúng đi trước tính từ hoặc trạng từ mà chúng bổ nghĩạ:
        
        Ví dụ: This food is very bad.
        She speaks English too quickly for me to follow.
        She can dance very beautifully.
        
        2.6. Trạng từ chỉ số lượng (Quantity)
        
        Diễn tả số lượng (ít hoặc nhiều, một, hai ... lần...)
        
        Ví dụ: My children study rather little
        The champion has won the prize twice.
        
        2.7. Trạng từ nghi vấn (Questions)
        
        Là những trạng từ đứng đầu câu dùng để hỏi, gồm: When, where, why, how:
        
        Ví dụ: When are you going to take it?
        Why didn't you go to school yesterday?
        
        2.8. Trạng từ liên hệ (Relation)
        
        Là những trạng từ dùng để nối hai mệnh đề với nhau. Chúng có thể diễn tả địạ điểm (where), thời gian (when) hoặc lí do (why):
        
        Ví dụ: I remember the day when I met her on the beach.
        This is the room where I was born.
         

        

        
        3. Trạng từ và tính từ có chung cách viết/đọc
        
        Nhiều tính từ và trạng từ trong tiếng Anh có chữ viết tương tự - tức là tính từ cũng là trạng từ và ngược lại, tuy nhiên chúng ta phải dựa vào cấu trúc và vị trí củạ chúng để xác định xem đâu là tính từ và đâu là trạng từ.
        
        Ví dụ: A hard worker works very hard.
        A late student arrived late.
        
        Chú ý: Mộ số tính và trạng từ có cách viết và đọc giống nhau:
        fast, only, late, pretty, right, short, sound, hard, fair, even, cheap, early, much, little.
        
        4. Cách hình thành trạng từ
        
        Tính từ + -ly : Phần lớn trạng từ chỉ thể cách có thể cách có thể đừợc thành lập bằng cách thêm -ly vào tính từ:

•                 Quick | quickly
•                 Kind | kindly
•                 Bad | badly
•                 Easy | easily
  
  

        5. Vị trí của trạng từ

•                 Trạng từ bổ nghĩạ cho từ loại nào thì phải đứng gần từ loại ấy. Quy tắc này thường được gọi là Quy tắc "cận kề".
  
  

        Ví dụ: She often says she visits her grandmother. (Often bổ nghĩạ cho "says")
        She says she often visits her grandmother. (Often bổ nghĩạ cho "visits")

•                 Trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong tình huống bình thường nên đặt nó ở cuối câu (như vậy rất khác với tiếng Việt).
  
  

        Ví dụ: We visited our grandmother yesterday.
        I took the exams last week.

•                 Trạng từ không được đặt/dùng giữa Động từ và Tân ngữ:
  
  

        Ví dụ: He speaks English slowly.
        He speaks English very fluently.

•                 Khi có một cụm từ dài hoặc mệnh đề theo sạu động từ, chúng ta có thể đặt trạng từ trước động từ.
  
  

        Hãy so sánh: “He opens the books quickly.” và “He quickly opens the books thạt the teạcher tells him to reạd.” (Anh ấy nhanh chóng mở quyển sách mà giáo viên yêu cầu).

•                 Một khi có nhiều trạng từ trong một câu, vị trí của trạng từ nằm ở cuối câu sẽ có thứ tự ưu tiên nhừ sạu:

•                 Những trạng từ chỉ phẩm chất cho cả một câu như Luckily, Fortunately, Eventually, Certainly hoặc Surely ... thường đừợc đặt ở đầu mỗi câu.
  
  

        Ví dụ: Certainly, they will be here thislatr afternoon.
        Luckily, she didn't live where the war broke out in 1914-1918.
        
        6. Hình thức so sánh của trạng từ

•                 Các hình thức so sánh của trạng từ cũng được tuân theo giống như các nguyên tắc của tính từ.
  
  

        Ví dụ:
He ran as fast as his close friend.
        I've been waiting for her longer than you

•                 Cũng như tính từ, Trạng từ cũng có hình thức so sánh kép:
  
  

        Ví dụ:
We are going more and more slowly.
        He is working harder and harder.

•                 Chú ý: Trong so sánh Hơn-Kém và so sánh nhất, khác với tính từ, trạng từ kết thúc bằng đuôi - ly (ending by - ly) sẽ được so sánh như tính từ đa (hai trở lên) âm tiết.

        250 trạng từ thường gặp trong tiếng Anh giao tiếp
        
        Trong số 2265 từ vựng tiếng Anh thông dụng nhất, có 252 từ là trạng từ. Tuy nhiên, trong số đó chỉ có 154 từ được sử dụng chủ yếu dưới dạng trạng từ, trong khi 98 từ còn lại thuộc những loại từ khác nhưng cũng có thể được sử dụng làm trạng từ. Ví dụ,từ "by" là một giới từ, như trong câu, "He drove by the restaurant." Tuy nhiên, nó cũng có thể là một trạng từ như trong câu, "The restaurant is close by."
        
        Vì tính đa nghĩa của từ vựng, cho nên vị trí của từ được sắp xếp theo thứ tự như sau 1) tần suất xuất hiện của những từ chỉ là trạng từ, sau đó là 2) tần suất xuất hiện của những từ chủ yếu là trạng từ, ngoài ra còn có thể là những loại từ khác,và cuối cùng là 3) tần suất xuất hiện của những từ chủ yếu là các loại từ khác, nhưng còn có thể là trạng từ.
